I LOVE Words January 30, 2008

I love words.  Some of my current favorites…

…juxtaposition

…onomatopoeia

…anthropomorphism

…double entendre…I like this word and this concept…double meaning.

Consider the following lyrics by Sarah Groves

It’s every loss and every love
It’s every blessing from above
Here I am, all added up
Oh, it’s all right here

It’s what I know, and what I’m guessing
Half truths, and full confessions
It’s why I choose to learn my lessons
Oh, it’s all right here

(Chorus)
And I’m not God, I’m a girl – I confess
That I don’t have a sea of forgetfulness
No, it’s all right here
It makes me stronger, it makes me wince
Makes me think twice when I pick my friends
Oh, it’s all right here
It’s all right here

It’s caution and curiousity
And it’s all the things I never see
Welling up inside of me
Oh, it’s all right here

It’s what is best, and what is worse
It’s how I see the universe
It’s in every line and every verse
Oh, it’s all right here

(Chorus)

Every heart has so much history
It’s my favorite place to start
Sit down a while and share your narative with me
I’m not afraid of who you are

I’m all here, and you’re all there
Some of this is unique, and some of it we share
Add it up and start from there
Well, it’s all right here

(Chorus)

I like to think of the title in a “double entendric” sense.  It’s “all right here.”  But also, it’s “alright here.’  Like it’s ok.  There is peace.

Just a thought.

Any words you love?

Happy Tales to You January 22, 2008

Tim usually orates Nolan’s bedtime story.  And Nolan has very definite ideas about what a good story should include.  Last night Tim gave me an overview of storytime requirements….in case I am called upon to fill in.

Each story must begin with a big (not little, mind you) boy named Nolan, a dog named Scruffy, and a boy cat named Cookie The Boy Cat.  There is a magical horse who lives over the fence.  His flying powers are activated by feeding him a Fuji apple.  Tales usually involve a rescue or other exciting adventure (like a lost sock).  Each story MUST include a trip to Florida AND a sleepover.  Favorite “extra” characters include our friend Koy, Giraffe, Elephant, Flamingo, Peacock, and Turtle.

Whew….

I don’t think I’m up to the challenge.  I may have to refer to my notes.

If he calls for you, and you do not respond in 2.7 seconds…

…”I don’t hear footsteps.”

Recent discussion about the puzzle his dad and sisters are working…

…”That puzzle takes for longer.  I know why Daddy is doing it and you are not.   Because you are slow and Daddy is FAST!”

Delivered with utmost sincerity after two nights of his joining us in bed at 5:00 AM…

…”Mommy, thank you for getting the girls’ germs off of your bed so I can sleep with you in the almost morning.”
